Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – Film Review

The film is the third installment in the Ant-Man series and marks a fresh beginning for Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Peyton Reed, the movie features a star-studded cast led by Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/Wasp), alongside the strong return of Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet Van Dyne), who gets more space to explore Janet’s past in the Quantum Realm, and Michael Douglas reprising his role as Hank Pym. However, the standout star here is Jonathan Majors as the new villain Kang, who leaves an exceptional mark on the Marvel Universe.

The story is set entirely in the Quantum Realm, which appeared briefly in previous films like Ant-Man and Avengers: Endgame. This film dives deep into this mysterious world, showcasing a fully realized civilization of strange creatures, stunning landscapes, and advanced technology. The visual designs recall the first time we saw worlds like Asgard or Wakanda, but with a unique sci-fi twist. The scenes within the Quantum Realm are filled with glowing colors and surreal creatures, creating an immersive visual experience, though some effects show minor inconsistencies in quality.

The film is not just about visuals—it also delivers emotional depth by focusing on the relationship between Scott and his daughter Cassie (played by Kathryn Newton). Scott, who spent years in the Quantum Realm during Endgame, is now trying to make up for lost time with his adventurous teenage daughter. Paul Rudd balances Scott’s spontaneous comedy with parental concern, and their dialogue is filled with family humor while also showing the tension of Cassie trying to prove herself as a hero. This relationship gives the story a human touch, linking personal stakes closely to cosmic missions.

If there is a scene-stealer in the film, it is undoubtedly Jonathan Majors as Kang. The villain is not simply a destructive force; he is complex, combining strategic intelligence with suppressed rage and a lethal sense of isolation. Majors gives the role a terrifying gravitas through his calm voice that conceals an existential threat, and body language that conveys his immense power.

The movie maintains the comedic tone typical of the Ant-Man series, but without excess. The humor complements the plot, such as Scott’s sarcastic remarks. The action sequences are inventive, especially with Scott’s ability to grow and shrink, used cleverly—for instance, turning an entire building into a weapon. Kang’s battles blend strength and tactical intelligence, enhanced by visual effects that heighten the sense of peril.

However, not everything is perfect. MODOK is the film’s biggest flaw. The character’s visual design feels inconsistent, and the blend of threat and comedy is poorly handled, making the character seem disconnected and unconvincing.

The film is not just a standalone adventure—it rebuilds momentum for the Marvel Universe after a scattered Phase Four. Kang’s appearance sets up a massive cosmic threat for Phase Five, with subtle hints in the post-credits scenes suggesting a multiverse war and new characters. Longtime Marvel viewers will feel the return of the “slow-cook” approach to building toward a major event, similar to the Avengers films, with Kang poised as the central villain of the upcoming saga.

While the film doesn’t reach the heights of No Way Home or other standout Marvel movies, it succeeds in delivering a satisfying, independent adventure while laying the foundation for larger events. Unfortunately, the visual effects—especially for MODOK—are embarrassing for a Marvel Cinematic Universe production.

Our rating for the film is:

6/10
