Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the Spider-Man film we’ve wanted for ages. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man finally becomes a major, impactful character in the MCU in his own right without being babysat by a mentor in this street-level, very personal story. Every actor and character in this film did a marvelous job and was utilised with incredible care and nuance. This is a major entry in the Spider-Man franchise and in the MCU as a whole.

The film is great in many aspects. It features the best performance in Tom Holland’s career overall, not just as Spider-Man. The film is heavily inspired by many storylines from the comics, and it does a perfect job of weaving them together into a fantastic script that works, resulting in one of the most well-structured and well-assembled comic book films of all time. Many shots look like they’re ripped out straight from the comics, which is always a plus. Some action sequences surpass what we’ve seen before and feel like they’re taken straight from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. One of the strongest aspects of this film is that it doesn’t have the expected cheesy dialogue, and it does not undo events in previous films.

The characters in this film are all important to the plot, whether for this film or future MCU projects. Jon Bernthal did a terrific job as The Punisher, where we see another side of Frank Castle as we explore his dynamic with Spider-Man. Mark Ruffalo brings back The Hulk in all his glory and classic smashing attitude, even if for a short period in the film’s runtime. Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds are faced with new and interesting revelations about their relationship with Spider-Man. And finally, the cherry on top, Sadie Sink’s character opens a whole new aspect of this world for us to explore and elevates this version of Spider-Man into possibly one of the most important characters for the MCU moving forward. Their interactions bring about endless possibilities for so many stories to explore and give longevity and breathe new life into Spider-Man and the MCU as a whole.

The film does not contain any stark negatives as I see it. I had some issues with editing and connecting scenes, but I was later treated to stunningly choreographed action scenes that more than make up for my initial discomfort. Fans of The Hulk may not be satiated with the amount of screen time he has, but I found it satisfactory. Finally, fans of The Punisher may question some character decisions by Frank Castle, but I found them to be similar to the interactions found in the comics that feature him and Spider-Man.

The future is bright for Spider-Man fans, and possibly for MCU fans who worry for the future. Given all that I experienced, the rating I will give is:
10/10
