Since his debut in comics, Black Adam has been surrounded by anticipation, especially with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson chosen to portray him. The film delivers a high-octane cinematic experience, redefining the concept of heroes and anti-heroes in the DC universe, and hints at a promising future under a new creative direction.
The story unfolds in Kahndaq, a fictional nation suffering under oppression and colonial rule. Black Adam is summoned centuries after being imprisoned in an ancient artifact, emerging as an unstoppable force that refuses to submit to anyone. His arrival brings Justice Society, led by Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), into a clash that pits absolute heroism against the brutal justice Adam embodies.

The standout performance comes from The Rock, who adds layers of complexity to the character, portraying his struggle between vengeance and protecting the innocent, combining immense physicality with compelling dramatic presence. Hawkman delivers a commanding, wise performance, while Doctor Fate adds a mystical and philosophical dimension, complemented by visually stunning magical effects.
The film’s action sequences are relentless, featuring high-speed battles and explosive displays of superpowers. Combat scenes showcase inventive coordination among Justice Society members, highlighting Black Adam’s brutal skillset. However, the final confrontations with the villain Sabak are visually weaker, and the villain himself is underdeveloped, with shallow motivations and rushed progression.

Beyond showcasing power, the film asks: “Who sets the standard for heroism?” Through sharp exchanges between Adam and the Justice Society, it explores the consequences of external intervention and the responsibility heroes must bear. These discussions add human depth to characters that might otherwise feel larger-than-life, making the conflict more engaging than simple physical battles.
Don’t miss the post-credits scene, which explicitly signals that the DC cinematic universe is gearing up for a new phase full of surprises. It connects past events to the future in a way that will excite fans and build anticipation.
The film isn’t perfect: some dialogue feels forced, and secondary characters like Atom Smasher and Cyclone are underdeveloped due to rushed introductions. Still, it delivers a satisfying action-packed experience with dynamic direction by Jaume Collet-Serra, maintaining fast pacing while balancing emotional beats.
Thanks to The Rock’s portrayal of a conflicted hero and hints of a promising future, the film marks a significant step forward for the DC universe. It’s a must-watch on the big screen starting October 20. Our rating for the film is:
7/10
